Ashford HIS 355 Week 4 Assignment Decolonization in Vietnam in Relation to the Cold War

Decolonization and the Cold War. Due by Day 7. The era of decolonization was concurrent to the Cold War, including ideological struggles between the United States and its allies against the Soviet Union and its allies. The Cold War had a dramatic impact on the process of decolonization, with the United States favoring anti-communist movements over anti-imperialist ones and the influence of both socialism and communism on a number of anti- imperial movements. Reflect on your readings to this point as well as the following article:

Suri, Jeremi. “The Cold War, Decolonization, and Global Social Awakenings: Historical Intersections.” Cold War History 6, no. 3 (August 2006): 353-363. MasterFILE Premier, EBSCOhost, Ashford University Library.

AND one of the following:

Connelly, Matthew. “Rethinking the Cold War and Decolonization: The Grand Strategy of the Algerian War for Independence.” International Journal of Middle East Studies 33, no. 2 (2001): 221-45. JSTOR, Ashford University Library.

Guan, Ang Cheng. “The Vietnam War, 1962-64: The Vietnamese Communist Perspective.” Journal of Contemporary History 35, no. 4 (2000): 601-18. JSTOR, Ashford University Library.

Parker, Jason. “Remapping the Cold War in the Tropics: Race, Communism, and National Security in the West Indies.” The International History Review 24, no. 2 (2002): 318-47. JSTOR, Ashford University Library.

It is recommended that you choose an article that can also be used for your final paper next week.

After completing your research, write a two- to three page essay that accomplishes the following in either the Algerian, Vietnamese, or West Indian Contexts:

• Analyze how independence, anti-imperial, and affiliated movements were seen by at least one of the superpowers (United States or USSR) during the Cold War.
• Evaluate the relationship between the former colony and the former imperial power within the context of the Cold War
• Assess the impact of the Cold War, if any, on the people of the former colony you chose.
• Make sure to include an introduction with a distinct thesis statement and a conclusion which summarizes your argument. Please use at least 2 secondary and 2 primary sources in your paper; these sources should be drawn from the materials required in the first two weeks of class. You may do additional library research, but it is not required.
