Ashford HIS 311 Week 3 Discussion 1 Gender and Religion

Write. In an initial post of at least 250-300 words, explain how historians analyze the relationship between religious ideas and gender constructs. Consider how religious beliefs shape definitions of gender difference and, at the same time, are affected by broader gender structures in society. Using Chapter 5 as your launch point for general concepts, use your chosen reading to illustrate one of the following points with reference to a specific historical context. Remember to cite specific examples from the required reading and your chosen scholarly source in your response to one of the following points:

• How did religious ideas about gender hierarchy or complementarity affect gender structures in the family, community, or state? Or, operating in the other direction, how did ideas about gender hierarchy or complementarity in the family, community, or state affect religious ideas about gender difference? With what larger significance?
• How did religious ideas about gender roles affect the exercise of spiritual authority? What was the relationship between spiritual authority and authority in the family, community, or state? Who could hold or exercise this authority? Why? With what larger significance?
• Compare or contrast ideas about gender roles and relationships in two different religious traditions. Which elements of these traditions are similar? Which elements are distinct? How would adherence to one religious tradition or the other affect women’s lives? How would it affect men’s lives?
• Examine the impact of fundamentalist strains within a single religion or among different religious traditions on ideas about gender roles and relationships. What other social structures are impacted or impact fundamentalist religious belief? How do these beliefs and their wider influence affect women’s lives? How do they affect men’s lives?
