Write. In an initial post of at least 250-300 words, based on a broadened understanding of the concept “political,” discuss how gender was central to relationships of power within local, regional, state, or international authority structures. Using Chapter 6 as your launch point for general concepts, use your chosen reading to illustrate one of the following points with reference to a specific historical context. Remember to cite specific examples from the required reading and your chosen scholarly source in your response to one of the following points:

• How did gender distinctions shape the structure of authority within a society? How were gender distinctions related to autocratic, complementary, or egalitarian authority systems? How did gender distinctions relate to exercise of formal versus informal power? How can you explain the significance of your observations?
• What were the relationships between hereditary aristocracies, territorial state governments, and the ways gender affected the exercise of power? What was the effect on women’s authority? What was the effect on men’s authority? Do you detect patterns, ambiguities, or exceptions? What is the significance of your observations?
• Did war affect gender dynamics? How? What roles did men and women play? Were these roles distinctive to periods of warfare? How did war affect definitions of masculinity, femininity, and “appropriate” sexuality? How or why did cessation of war affect gender dynamics?
• How did concepts of citizenship encode gender distinction as part of the development of national identities? How or why did revolutionary movements reinforce or generate challenges to gendered definitions of citizenship?
• How were culturally constructed ideas about gender difference central to the imposition of colonial and imperial power? How were concepts of racial and cultural superiority expressed by colonial powers in gendered terms? How was resistance to colonialism likewise tied to ideas about gender roles and gendered definitions of authority?
