Ashford HIS 355 Week 1 Discussion 2 Imperialism

Imperialism. 1st Post Due by Day 3. • Prepare: Read:

Ballantyne, Tony. “Religion and Missions in South Asia and the Pacific.” In Empire Online, Ashford University Library.

Betts, Raymond. Decolonization (2nd ed.). New York: Routledge, 2004 o Introduction
o Chapter1:EmpireintheAfternoon

Owomoyela, Oyekan. “The Literature of Empire: Africa.” In Empire Online, Ashford University Library. Shepard, Todd (ed). Voices of Decolonization: A Brief History with Documents. Boston: Bedford/St.

Martin’s, pages 1-20.

• Reflect: Think of the spread imperialism in the nineteenth century. By the outbreak of WWI, all of Africa and most of South and Southeast Asia had been incorporated into European (or, in the case of the Philippines, the United States) empire. What cultural, social, and technological developments aided the spread of imperialism? How were Cuba (which was not formally part of the U.S. empire but heavily influenced by it) and Algeria (which was seen by the French as part of France; not a colony) special cases?
• Write: In an initial post of at least 250 to 300 words, reflect upon how Europeans (and later, Americans) viewed the remainder of the world and how these views led to the expansion of imperialism as the century progressed. Use the following questions to guide your response:

o WhatinstitutionswithinEuropeannationsandtheUnitedStatesbenefitedfromimperialism? How did they act as agents of empire?

o HowdidtheviewofAfricaandAsiaas“exotic”helpfuelimperialism?Whatimpactdidthis view have on indigenous peoples there?

o Consulttherequiredmapsforthisweek—whatdotheytellusaboutEuropeanimperialism? o HowwasHobson’sviewdifferentfromotherEuropeanviewsonimperialism?Inwhatways

were they similar?
o Inyouropinion,wasimperialismsimplyeconomicinnature–orwasempireseenas

“fashionable” by Europeans – or both? Explain.

• Respond to Peers: Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7. In your responses of at least 150 words each, compare your perspectives with those of your colleagues. After considering your colleagues’ findings and reconsidering your own, what sources or ideas might provide more insight into this issue? What further questions should be asked?
