Using Chapter 3 as your launch point for general concepts, use your chosen reading to illustrate one of the following points with reference to a specific historical context. • How did gender shape the way work was defined and valued? Which activities had economic value? Which did not? Upon what basis were such distinctions made? How do definitions of work and its relative value change over time and place?
• How were gender-based, work-associated distinctions related to other realms of economic activity, such as access to property; control over productive capacities; access to education; or power within the family, social group, or wider society?
• How did different systems of production affect gendered divisions of labor? Consider a context such as slave labor, industrial production, or service economies to examine this issue.
• How did race or class intersect with gender in the realm of economic activity? Did socially defined racial, class, or gender differences affect ideas about types of work and its value? With what larger significance?
