GMOs

There is a need to increase global food production in order to ensure food security for people in all countries.  Currently, world hunger is a significant issue - according to the Food and Agricultural Organization (of the United Nations), in the time period of 2014–2016, 795 million people in the world, just over one in nine, were undernourished (FAO 2017). Many countries with a high prevalence of undernourishment are found in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

One suggested remedy to this problem is to increase the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).  Please spend a little time researching and reading some information on GMOs on the internet. 

While science and technology have long been used in agriculture, and the science of GMOs may provide significant breakthroughs in increasing crop yields, many people question whether or not they should be used.   After reading about GMOs, please discuss your views on GM crops and seeds and the foods produced from them.  What are some of the short- and long-term consequences of GM crops for the environment?
